FISH OF MIND

by admin on Mar.07, 2010, under Fishes, Home Tips, Howto & Style

Tired? Stressed out? Just plain bored after school? You could try to relax in front of the television or hang out with friends. But did you know that keeping tropical fish in an aquarium can reduce stress and relieve nervous tension.

Imagine sitting in a room where the only light comes from a fish tank. Behind the glass a variety of colorful fine streams of bubbles. Some fish probe the crevices between rocks; others sift gravel searching for hidden tidbits. Without even realizing it, you might spend hours enjoying the playful antics of your fish. If a tropical fish hobby sounds interesting to you, the following advice will help you get started.

Equipment

all-glass-aquariumMost pet store dealers have complete setups that include an all-glass aquarium (the 29-gallon size is best, but a 10-gallon tank will work too), air pump with tubing and air stones, under gravel and box filters, and even plastic ornamental and plants.

An aquarium kit is perhaps best. It will give you the basic equipment to work with and, more important, the opportunity to meet a reputable pet dealer. His advice will be invaluable in the future.

Since you’re new to the hobby, this might be the simplest way to go. But if you’re more adventurous (and cost-conscious too), you might find most of what you need at some neighborhood yard sale. Before you purchase from this and other similar sources, however, be sure the aquarium holds water and has a cover with a working light. The air pump should produce a steady and firm flow. Check out heaters to see that the glass isn’t cracked and that the heating element is free of rust.

Basic Room Painting

basic-room-painting

Your room needs painting, but hiring a painter will affect your tight budget. Try this do-it-yourself idea.

Preparation

o Relocate stuff to another room. Move furniture to center of room and cover with drop cloth.

o Sandpaper blemishes and surfacing compounds.

o Fill cracks and gaps with caulk; hammer flat nailheads and cover them up with spackle (available in hardware stores).

o Cover moldings, casings, and switch plates with quick-release tape. Since you are an amateur painter your hands may not be as steady as the average painter.

o Cover floor and baseboard with old newspapers. A drop cloth may be tucked under the paper for extra layer of protection.

o Sweep floor to reduce dust in the air and prevent it from sticking into wet paint.

o Open windows and turn on electric fans for a well-ventilated work area. You may wear goggles or mask to prevent eye and lung irritation.

the-bamboo-grass

Like the ever-present coconut, sometimes called the Philippine “tree of life,” the bountiful bamboo is certainly a most common member of the country’s flora. Of the known 200 species and 23 genera, 30 species and six genera – both indigenous and introduced – are found in the Philippines. Undoubtedly the tallest giant of the grass family, it grows rapidly during the rainy season on a daily average of 30 to 40 centimeters.

The main function of the bamboo for Filipino is as a construction material. The posts, beams, and framework of many of our rural houses are made out of bamboo. Split bamboos can serve as roof tiles. When woven they can be made into sawali for sidings and partitions. Bamboo floors when waxed and polished have a beautiful finish. And bamboo slats can be used instead of iron bars for concrete construction.

choosing-furniture

When it comes to choosing furniture to adorn every space of your home, proportion is important. On this aspect, take into consideration and put forward the following tips:

• Measure your space. Write it on a paper. Include other details like door and window location.

• Source the furniture and measure these pieces.

• Layout the size of the furniture in your space. Use masking tape or make a cut-out to layout the furniture size on the floor.

• Check if it fits. If it doesn’t eat up too much space and you think that it works well with the area, by all means buy the furniture. Just make sure that you’re still within your design theme.
